He added that he didn't think the incident was "so serious" but pledged that he was "ready to face his responsibilities". The man now faces charges of aggravated damage to a cultural heritage site, in addition to a fine. The damage caused by the "wrong turn" has since been repaired by technicians from Rome's Superintendence of Cultural Heritage. The Spanish Steps underwent a €1.5 million restoration by luxury fashion house Bulgari between 2015 and 2016.
