The temperatures may be dropping but Rome’s artistic and musical offerings are hotter than ever.

Pasolini the Painter – From Friday 14

It’s been a year of celebrations for the centenary of the birth of the inimitable and widely beloved Pier Paolo Pasolini. The 20th century’s answer to the Italian Renaissance man, Pasolini distinguished himself as a poet, filmmaker, journalist, novelist, translator, playwright, and actor. But many do not realize that his artistic genius also included painting, and a new exhibit at Rome’s Gallery of Modern Art looks at this often neglected side of his creative output. Roughly two hundred works, both paintings and sketches that range between portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, make up the exhibit, documenting the exceptional artistic experimentation of the young Pasolini.

The season kicks off with a bang with Richard Strauss’s one-act tour de force Elektra, performed in concert version. Soloists include celebrated stars like soprano Ausrine Stundyte in the title role, mezzo soprano Petra Lang as Clytemnestra, tenor Neal Cooper as Aegisthus, and baritone Kostas Smoriginas as Orestes, all under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano.

Giselle– From Friday 21 to Thursday 27

For an evening tailor-made to delight the senses, there’s no better fit than a night of spectacular ballet in the dazzling setting of Teatro Costanzi. The ballet corps, soloists, and principal dancers of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the premier classical dance company of the city, present the tragic and haunting tale of Giselle. Set to music by Adolphe-Charles Adam, the ballet tells the story of an innocent peasant girl who dies of heartbreak when she is betrayed by her heartless seducer, only to return to haunt him and dance him to death in revenge. The main roles are interpreted by étoiles such as Susanna Salvi, Rebecca Bianchi, Alessio Rezza, and Claudio Cocino.
