This month, Rome rolls out the red carpet (literally) to celebrate all things cinema. Tiffany Parks shares her preview.

Every year in Rome, just as the weather begins to turn and the leaves start to change color, the city puts art and antiquities on the back burner for a short time to turn its attention to the fascinating world of cinema. The annual Rome Film Fest, now in its 17th edition, kicks off on 13 October for a ten-day extravaganza for film professionals, journalists, and anyone passionate about cinema. The festival’s principal venue is the Auditorium Parco della Musica, Rome’s major performing arts complex, with a 1,300-square-meter avenue leading to the open-air theater that transforms into one of the largest red carpets in the world.

For years, the festival has been dedicated to celebrating world-class filmmaking, both Italian and international, with high-profile screenings and tributes, making the world of cinema more accessible with celebrity appearances, and sharing the expertise of seasoned film professionals with the public through masterclasses, conferences, debates, and exhibitions. But this year, in addition to all that, the new artistic director, Paola Malanga, along with the other organizers, has decided to make the festival competitive once again. The competition, titled Progressive Cinema – Visions for the World of Tomorrow, will be judged by a jury of professionals in the fields of cinema, culture, and the arts.

In addition, the program includes other non-competitive sections: Freestyle features films with no restrictions on format, length, or style, from television series to video clips to video art; Grand Public is dedicated to cinema for the wider public; Best of 2022 presents some of the finest films of the season seen in other international festivals; and Restorations and Retrospectives presents masterpieces that have been restored to their original splendor in order to explore the work of past greats of Italian and international cinema.
