UPDATED FOR 2021: Visiting Rome in August used to mean eating badly or seldom, but things have changed in recent years (including due to the covid crisis…places just can’t afford to close) and now gastronomic-minded visitors need not compromise. Some great restaurants in Rome will be open for most of the month, so whether you want fine dining, the city’s best gricia, pizza, or some down-home offal, you won’t be disappointed.

Please note, these openings have been updated for 2021. They were accurate when published. Be sure to book well in advance and bear in mind that August 15 (The Feast of the Assumption aka Ferragosto) is a national holiday and most (but not all!) businesses citywide will be closed. Be sure to confirm openings before turning up. Also, crucially, restaurants, bars, cafes, and pastry shops will require proof of vaccination, proof of a negative covid test with 48 hours, or an official letter stating you have recovered from covid and therefore have antibodies beginning August 6. Be sure to obtain the credentials suitable for your country of origin.

Rome’s markets remain open Monday through Saturday, though many stalls close for a week or two. You’ll still be able to find provisions at Mercato Trionfale, Mercato di Testaccio, and in the other roughly 120 markets throughout the city. Meanwhile, La Tradizione near the Cipro Metro is staying open throughout the month (closed, as usual, Sundays).
