From exciting young talent to seasoned masters, classic music lovers have lots in store this month. Tiffany Parks fills you in.

One of the city’s most prestigious musical organizations, the Roman Philharmonic Academy is hosting an exciting list of world-class musicians this month in a program of concerts.

The month starts with a highly anticipated one-night-only performance by the great Mischa Maisky, indisputably one of the greatest interpreters of Bach’s cello works on the planet. On 2 March, the Soviet-born Israeli cellist will grace the stage of the Teatro Argentina, along with his priceless 18th-century Montagnana cello, to perform three of Bach’s six Suites for Solo Cello, (nos.1, 4, and 5), true monuments to the classical canon that he has performed several times in concert, as well as recorded for three different albums over the course of his career. In the Suites, rule and invention find an unsurpassed meeting point, “a large diamond, with many different facets that reflect light in countless ways,” says Maisky.

On 23 March, also at Teatro Argentina, one of the fastest rising violin stars. Augustin Hadelich. Playing a precious Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù violin dating to 1744, Hadelich presents a diverse solo recital that combines two Bach Partitas with the music of the American Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, an unusual mix of baroque counterpoint, blues, and folk music. Praised for his extraordinary technique, rigor, and the persuasiveness of interpretations, the Grammy Award-winning violinist has performed with the leading American orchestras, as well as several more across Europe and Asia.

In addition, the Sala Casella, the academy’s more intimate performance venue, hosts three appointments of “Cello Unveiled,” a series of concerts dedicated to the rediscovery of forgotten masterpieces of the cello repertoire, on the 10th, 17th, and 31st. And on 4 and 24 March, concerts in collaboration with the Società Umanitaria will see performances of exceptional young musicians like Marina Boselli on the rarely heard euphonium, and Duo Kimé, (cellist Alessandro Mauriello and pianist Gianluca Terruli) interpreting Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann.
