Rome's Fiumicino airport opens new luxury dog hotel
Fiumicino launches Dog Relais Airport Resort and Daycare.Rome's award-winning international airport Leonardo da Vinci, known as Fiumicino, has opened new boarding kennels offering luxury accommodation for dogs.Dog Relais, the first of its kind ever built in an Italian airport, is designed to offer dogs a "unique and comfortable" stay, whether just for a day or a longer period while their owners travel.
The innovative facility features individual lodges with indoor and outdoor spaces - covered and uncovered - complete with air conditioning, automatic drinking troughs and piped music.
Located beside the long-term car park, the structure offers dog-owners the chance to drop off their four-legged friend before hopping on a plane.

Airport workers can also avail of the dog daycare services provided by expert handlers.
With a focus on the animals' wellbeing, Dog Relais describes itself as "a safe and stimulating environment, where your dog can have fun and socialise in complete tranquility".
It also offers additional features including grooming and veterinary services and is equipped with video call facilities allowing dog owners to check in with their pets from afar.
Prices range from around €40 a night for single dogs and €50 for double (up to four dogs depending on size), to €60 for a single dog with exclusive services. Full details can be found on the Dog Relais website.
Italy recently expanded its air travel rules to allow pet-owners to take larger dogs on board flights, in the cabin, leaving it up to airlines to define the fares and travel conditions for passengers flying with their pets.
