Girl's body found dumped in Afragola, near Naples.A 19-year-old man has confessed to killing his 14-year-old former girlfriend in Afragola, a town in the outskirts of Naples, in a murder case that has shocked Italy. The girl, Martina Carbonaro, went missing on Monday evening and her body was found early on Wednesday dumped in a wardrobe in an abandoned building.
"I hit her with a rock... she didn't want to get back together with me", the man allegedly told investigators, according to the Naples edition of Corriere della Sera newspaper.
The suspect, who was detained by Carabinieri police on Tuesday, has been identified in the Italian media as construction worker Alessio Tucci.
He allegedly confessed to the murder after being shown surveillance footage of the scene of the crime.
The cameras showed Tucci and 14-year-old Martina entering an abandoned building in the Campo Moccia sports complex.
However a few hours later it was only Tucci who emerged from the building.
"He was upset" - Mario Mangazzo, the lawyer who is defending him, told the Corriere della Sera - "He said he committed the murder in a moment of anger, out of jealousy."
The suspect now faces charges of aggravated homicide and concealment of a corpse.
"I just want justice. I want life imprisonment for this boy" - the victim's distraught mother Enza Cossentino told reporters - "What sin did my daughter commit? She was as beautiful as the sun. Now I will go back home and find her little room empty".
Martina aveva solo 14 anni.Aveva la vita davanti, i sogni, le amicizie, la scuola. Le è stata tolta con una violenza che lascia senza fiato, uccisa brutalmente da chi diceva di volerle bene. In a social media post on Thursday, Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni slammed the "merciless crime" and offered her deepest sympathies to Martina's family.
"Martina was only 14 years old" - Meloni wrote - "She had her life ahead of her, her dreams, her friendships, her school...[she was] brutally killed by someone who said they loved her. A merciless crime that deeply affects every parent, every citizen, every human being."
Meloni said that in recent years "steps forward" have been made in an effort to "stop this evil" but acknowledged that "a profound cultural and social change" is needed to combat the scourge of femicide.
The brutal killing of Martina Carbonaro is the latest in a string of femicides in Italy and comes about six weeks after the murders of students Ilaria Sula and Sara Campanella sparked outrage.
