Bayesian: Sunken superyacht raised from Sicily seabed

Mike Lynch was among those who died when the Bayesian sank during a violent storm last August.Salvage teams in Sicily raised the Bayesian superyacht completely out of the water on Saturday, after successfully raising the sunken vessel from the seabed on Friday.Cranes were used to lift the hull of the vessel, which sank 10 months ago off the Sicilian coast, claiming the lives of seven people including UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his teenage daughter Hannah. The complex salvage operation, which is being overseen by TMC Maritime and has cost roughly $30 million, involved slowly raising the yacht from the seabed, 50 metres down, over the past three days. The recovery operation was aided by the removal of the yacht's 72-metre mast which will be retrieved from the seabed at a later date. The 56-metre luxury sailing yacht sank suddenly off Porticello, near Palermo, during a violent storm on 19 August 2024. 15 people survived the disaster, including Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, the captain and all crew members except the chef. Reports suggest the yacht may have contained safes with encrypted hard drives, possibly linked to Lynch’s past collaboration with UK and US intelligence agencies. Further tragedy struck the Bayesian last month when a specialist diver died during initial attempts to salvage the yacht. The vessel will be transported to the nearby port of Termini Imerese as part of an ongoing investigation to establish the cause of the sinking.
