The Art of “riposo”: Taking advantage of the hottest hours in the day in Rome

Rome in summer can be overwhelming for first-time visitors. The ancient cobblestones radiate heat, tourist crowds peak at midday, and many (not all!) shops close in the early afternoons. This may seem like a mysterious occurrence, but it’s actually not at all mysterious! Seasoned travellers know that this period when the city slows down is Roman culture at its finest — and it’s free for anyone and everyone visiting Rome to experience.

The traditional Italian “riposo” (afternoon rest) represents one of the most unique cultural differences you’ll encounter in Rome. You may have heard referred to as “siesta”, but that is a Spanish word for a similar concept.

Riposo is the Italian tradition of taking an afternoon break, typically between 1:00-4:00 PM. Shops close, restaurants pause service, and locals disappear from the streets. This practice stems from centuries of Mediterranean wisdom: avoid the day’s most intense heat. Italians (and Romans) spend time with their families or handle household chores at this time. While it’s not something every single Italian adheres to (think office workers!), a significant number of locals does.

What about those who are visiting Rome? They can take a leaf from true Romans to find a hidden rhythm to their visit. Riposo teaches valuable lessons about sustainable tourism. Rather than rushing through attractions, this practice encourages deeper cultural immersion and mindful travel.

However, being in Rome at the peak of the heatwave doesn’t necessarily mean having to sacrifice a whole bunch of hours by staying hidden in your accommodation! And if you’re feeling extra bold, you can have the city to yourself during those same hours (which doesn’t mean having to experience a heatstroke: read on!).

During these hottest hours, Rome transforms. The bustling streets quiet down, creating perfect conditions for activities that are often overlooked by tourists rushing between major sites.

Why it works: Churches remain open and provide natural air conditioning through their stone construction. You don’t have to be Catholic to visit them, but
being respectful is key
.

Why it works:
Underground sites
maintain cool temperatures year-round.

Don’t just look for catacombs: many churches have underground levels that can be as cool, and are in the city center!

Why it works: Mature trees provide natural shade, and gardens are designed for leisurely walks.

Why it works: Museums provide climate control and cultural enrichment.

Free museum opportunities abound in Rome:
here
is a previous post on this topic! However, don’t forget non-free city museums that are climate-controlled and not crowded – the Ara Pacis museum, the Capitoline Museums, the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme…

Why it works: You can wait for the heatwave to subside and pamper yourself at the same time!

Many high-end hotels allow entrance to their spas (a few are listed
here
) even to non-guests. And there’s a number of very nice hammams scattered throughout the city. For actual thermal baths, conversely, you’ll need to get out of town.

Scared about planning a trip to Rome during the heatwave? Don’t! There are so many more activities you can plan, including daytrips out of town, retreating to malls and department stores and
embracing the coolness of English-language cinemas
… don’t fear the Roman summer!
