Rome prepares to welcome surge of pilgrims for Jubilee of Youth
Mayor says "Rome is ready" for major religious event scheduled from 28 July to 3 August.Rome will host the Jubilee of Youth, the largest event of the Vatican's ongoing Jubilee Year, with hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims set to descend on Italy's capital.Details of the week-long event were presented last week by the Vatican's chief Jubilee organiser, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, and Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri, who said the city "is ready".
The capital will extend the opening hours of its subway service, as well as boosting emergency healthcare services, and there will be more than 20,000 people at work to ensure the event runs smoothly, including stewards, volunteers and police.
The programme includes a welcome Mass in St Peter's Square on Tuesday 29 July at 18.00, followed by two days dedicated to "Dialogue with the City" meetings, featuring cultural, artistic and spiritual activities throughout the capital.

On Friday 1 August, the Circus Maximus will host a Penitential Day, with 200 priests alternating every two hours to hear the confessions of young people who wish to receive the sacrament.
The last two days will be based in the southeastern Tor Vergata suburb where the city recently unveiled the Vela landmark, redeveloped in time for the Jubilee of Youth.
Saturday 2 August will involve a day of entertainment, music and testimonies, until the vigil with Pope Leo XIV begins at 20.30, with participants set to remain at the site overnight.
On Sunday 3 August, the final act of the Jubilee of Youth will take place with a Mass at 09.00 presided over by Pope Leo XIV.
