Amanda Knox TV miniseries revisits murder case that gripped Italy

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox dramatises one of the most sensationalised crime cases of the 21st century.A new eight-part TV series focuses on the story of Amanda Knox, an American college student who was wrongfully convicted and later acquitted of the 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in the central Italian city of Perugia. What sets this series apart is that Knox herself serves as an executive producer, along with Monica Lewinsky, a choice that frames the show as an attempt to reclaim the narrative from the media frenzy that defined the original case. The Hulu series, which premieres on Disney+ in Italy on 20 August, is billed as an account of "Knox's harrowing journey after being wrongfully imprisoned for her roommate's murder, her battle to prove her innocence and regain her freedom". The show centres on the miscarriage of justice, delving into the flawed investigation, language barriers and the sensationalism that turned Knox into a global figure vilified as "Foxy Knoxy." The show captures the various stages of Knox's ordeal (with Grace Van Patten in the lead role) and explores the perspectives of her co-accused then boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, and the Italian prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, who led the investigation. While the series has been commended for its compelling performances and its focus on the human impact of the case, it has also drawn criticism for its tone, which some reviewers describe as "bubbly" and overly-romanticised, with hammy scenes and clichés. Other critics have panned it for not fully including the perspective of Kercher, or her family. Meredith's sister Stephanie Kercher told The Guardian last year as filming got underway in Italy: "Our family has been through so much and it is difficult to understand how this serves any purpose."   Amanda Knox on trial in Perugia in January 2011. American Knox, 38, spent four years in prison in Italy after being wrongfully convicted of Kercher's murder, before being cleared of the crime in 2015 along with her Italian former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito. Rudy Guede, the only person definitively convicted of Kercher's murder, was released in 2021 after serving 14 years of a 16-year jail sentence. He has always maintained his innocence. Knox returned to Italy last year in an attempt to quash a three-year defamation conviction for falsely accusing Congolese bar owner Patrick Lumumba of killing Kercher, telling reporters that she wanted to clear her name "once and for all of the false charges against me." Lawyers for Knox claimed that she had been under police duress when she named Lumumba who was jailed for two weeks in 2007 before being released. However Knox lost her bid to overturn the slander conviction after a court in Florence upheld the ruling, prompting her to appeal the verdict in one last attempt to clear her name. Now a writer, activist and podcast host, Knox returned to the US in 2011 after being freed by an appeals court in Italy. Photo Disney+
