Armani had missed Milan Fashion Week last June, to recover from an undisclosed condition, and reportedly had been planning a major event to celebrate 50 years of his signature Giorgio Armani fashion house during Milan Fashion Week. "With his elegance, sobriety, and creativity, he brought prestige to Italian fashion and inspired the entire world" - Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media - hailing him as "an icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy." Italy's culture minister Alessandro Giuli paid tribute to Armani for being "not just a master of fashion, but a recognised ambassador of Italian identity around the world". He started out in 1957 as a buyer for Milan department store La Rinascente before training at the fashion house of Italian stylist Nino Cerruti. The Armani brand was born in 1975. Its ready-to-wear clothing for men and women quickly became known for its elegant but minimalist style. Over the years Armani expanded the brand to include perfume, accessories, cosmetics and sportwear along with lines including Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans. In 2021 he received the Knight Grand Cross, Italy's highest honour, for his service to Italian fashion. In accordance with his wishes, Armani's funeral will be private but mourners can pay their respects at a funeral chamber open on Saturday and Sunday in Milan.
