How Italy's general strike for Gaza will hit public transport on Monday

General strike to impact public transport across Italy but will not affect air travel.Italian trade unions have called a 24-hour general strike on Monday 22 September, involving the public and private sectors, to demonstrate their solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The strike is set to cause significant disruption to trains, local public transport services, schools, universities and ports around the country, however air travel will be exempt. In a joint statement, the CUB, USB, ADL and SGB unions said the strike is "against the genocide in Palestine" and the "supply of weapons to Israel". The unions have demanded "unconditional support for the Global Sumud Flotilla mission" and "sanctions against Israel", denouncing "the inertia of the Italian and EU governments" in the face of the violence suffered by the people of Gaza. Trains Italy's national state-owned railway holding company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) said in a statement that the walkout would involve employees of Trenitalia, Italo and Trenord, and could lead to timetable changes "even before and after" the strike. Railway workers will be on strike for 23 hours, from midnight on Sunday until 23.00 on Monday night. Regional rail services are guaranteed during strikes on weekdays from 06.00 to 09.00 and from 18.00 to 21.00, with full details about guaranteed services available on the Trenitalia and Italo websites. Local public transport Rome Rome's public transport network, including buses, trams, metro and light-rail services operated by ATAC, will be at risk on Monday from 08.30-17.00 and from 20.00 until end of service. Rail services to and from Rome's Fiumicino airport may experience delays or cancellations. Milan Milan public transport provider ATM says it will guarantee services until 08.45 and from 15.00 to 18.00, with possible disruption to the Como-Brunate funicular service from 08.30 to 04.30 and from 19.30 until the end of service. Turin Bus, subway and tram services in Turin operated by GTT are guaranteed to run from 06.00 to 09.00 and midday to 15.00, with extra-urban services to operate until 08.00 and from 14.30-17.30. Taxis Taxi drivers are set to strike for 24 hours, from midnight on Sunday until the same time on Monday night. In addition to the education sector, the strike is also set to cause disruption to port services, logistics and motorways. There will be meetings, sit-ins and demonstrations across the country on Monday, with major rallies scheduled in Rome and Milan. We update our news of public transport strikes in Italy regularly.
