Rome begins work to secure mediaeval tower after collapse

Worker died after partial collapse of Rome's Torre dei Conti three weeks ago.Work got under way in Rome on Wednesday to secure a mediaeval tower whose partial collapse on 3 November resulted in the death of a construction worker.The works will involve securing the façade to protect the 13th-century Torre dei Conti, a landmark located near the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Police have authorised the release of part of the construction site which had been subject to a seizure order following the disaster, amid an investigation for manslaughter, negligent disaster and serious injury. Octav Stroici, a 66-year-old Romanian man, was trapped under the rubble for more than 11 hours was extracted alive by firefighters but died after arriving in hospital. Rome's mayor Roberto Gualtieri declared a day of mourning for Stroici, and ordered the evacuation of a number of residential and commercial buildings in the vicinity of the tower.
