From popes to tennis, the Eurovision to Gaza, who and what did Italians search for most on Google in 2025?Sport, celebrities and geopolitics all feature highly in the most searched topics on Google in Italy over the past year, the internet search engine said on Thursday. The report focuses on words that showed a spike in Google searches, rather than the most searched topics overall, providing a snapshot of 2025 as the year draws to a close. The most searched person online in Italy this year was Lucio Corsi, who came second place in the Sanremo Music Festival and went on to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest. The Tuscan singer-songwriter also appears at the top of the singers' rankings, and his song, Volevo essere un duro, performed at Sanremo 2025, is the most searched for online. In second place, in all three categories, is the singer Olly, who won Sanremo but turned down the chance to perform at the Eurovision, with Corsi taking his place. The third person to see a spike in searches was the tennis player Lorenzo Musetti who this year reached sixth place in the ATP rankings. In fourth place is the model Bianca Balti, who recounted her cancer treatment journey and the depression that followed. The fifth most searched person was Jasmine Paolini, winner of the Rome International Singles and Doubles Championships and eighth in the WTA rankings. Notable from his absence in the top 10 most searched people was tennis star Jannik Sinner who topped the list in 2023. Celebrities and noted world figures who died in 2025 led to major spikes in internet searches, with the death of Pope Francis resulting in a surge of online activity. Other figures widely searched in the hours after news of their deaths was announced include veteran television personality Pippo Baudo, fashion legend Giorgio Armani, right-wing US activist Charlie Kirk, and actress Eleonora Giorgi. "Why?..." Major current affairs topics and world conflicts stand out in the list of questions Google users asked in 2025 in the "Why?" and "What does it mean?" categories. Other questions related to artificial intelligence, the Hollywood fires, the separation of careers for judges and prosecutors, the 2007 murder of Chiara Poggi in the so-called Garlasco case, and why singer Olly chose to forgo the Eurovision. There was a flurry of questions relating to the newly elected Pope Leo XIV, including why he chose that name and what "Augustinian" meant. Food The most searched dish is the Neapolitan savoury bread Casatiello, followed by Easter Colomba cake and "Uova alla Jova" - an egg recipe popularised by singer Jovanotti - while one of the most searched recipes, coinciding with carnevale season, is "How do you make chiacchiere?" Films and TV series The film that stands out in Google searches in 2025 is Conclave, released just before the death of Pope Francis.
