Pope Leo to close Holy Door marking end of Jubilee Year in Rome

Jubilee 2025 attracted over 33 million pilgrims.Pope Leo XIV will close the Holy Door at St Peter's on Tuesday at 09.30, formally signifying the end of the Vatican's 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope.Italy's president Sergio Mattarella will attend the ceremony which comes after the doors of Rome's three other papal basilicas - St Mary Major, St John Lateran and St Paul Outside the Walls - were closed in recent days. The Jubilee, launched by Pope Francis on Christmas Eve 2024, has attracted a total of 33,475,369 pilgrims, the Vatican said on Monday. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the chief Vatican organiser responsible for coordinating the holy year events, specified that Italians made up the largest number of pilgrims, followed by visitors from the US. The Jubilee led to the completion of dozens of infrastructure projects in Rome, notably the Piazza Pia underpass near Castel Sant'Angelo. In a tradition dating back to 1300, Vatican jubilees take place every 25 years and are designed as a special year of grace, in which the Church offers the faithful the possibility of obtaining a plenary indulgence by passing through the Holy Doors.
