Family of three killed in Rome by car in high-speed police chase

Fatal collision in Rome following police pursuit.A high-speed police pursuit in the outskirts of Rome ended in tragedy on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of three family members after their vehicle was struck by suspects fleeing a security checkpoint.  The incident began in the Quarticciolo district when a vehicle carrying three men failed to stop for a routine police check. The suspects accelerated away from the scene, prompting an immediate pursuit by state police with support from the Carabinieri.   In an attempt to evade authorities, the fleeing vehicle entered a section of Via Collatina travelling against the flow of traffic.   The suspects' vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming car carrying a couple, aged 70 and 64, and their son, 42.   While initial reports indicated two fatalities, officials later confirmed that all three occupants of the second vehicle - the father, mother and son - succumbed to their injuries.   Upon inspecting the suspects' vehicle, police officers discovered burglary tools, including screwdrivers and a signal jammer, suggesting the occupants may have been involved in criminal activity prior to the stop. The three men in the fleeing car, described by state broadcaster RAI News as "South American", were apprehended at the scene.   One was taken into custody immediately, while the other two were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment under police guard.   They currently face a series of serious charges, including vehicular homicide, resisting public officials and possession of burglary tools.   Local authorities have opened an investigation to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the pursuit and the subsequent collision.   Photo credit: VILTVART / Shutterstock.com.
