Alessandro Bernini: The Italian Jeweler Behind Rap’s Rising Stars

From Parma to Monaco, the 26-year-old designer is blending high jewelry tradition with the global influence of hip-hop culture.Alessandro Bernini made a name for himself in the music industry at just twenty-six years old. The Parma-born bespoke jewelry maker is the go-to designer not only for Italy’s young stars but has also expanded his clientele to include international hitmakers and even royalty.Bernini grew up passionate about art and was heavily inspired by American hip-hop. He moved to Monaco at twenty-one to study business at university, where he also began working at a family office, which introduced him to a network of clients. During this time, he also began an apprenticeship under Alberto Vitale of Vitale 1913, with whom he still often collaborates. His first major design was for Italian rapper and singer Tedua, followed by Fedez, which catapulted him into the spotlight and led to commissions from other up-and-coming Italian stars such as Tony Effe and Sfera Ebbasta. After these pieces, the calls began coming in for Bernini. American rappers like Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, and Drake began acquiring pieces while visiting Monaco and Milan. Eventually, he even received a request on behalf of Charlene, Princess of Monaco, for a Christmas gift for Prince Albert. Bernini has quickly mastered the harmony between old-world tradition and the globalization of rap culture. While this approach is becoming increasingly popular in fashion and other forms of design, Bernini is one of the few individuals in European high jewelry moving in this direction. His work goes beyond the design and delivery of the piece. By removing the middleman, Bernini is involved in every step of the creation process, including sourcing the gemstones and overseeing the manufacturing of each piece. His most recent creation, a tennis bracelet, features a collection of multicolored sapphires set in 18k rose gold and was commissioned by New York creative director and stylist Bloody Osiris. Bernini’s niche collaborations with influential figures in the entertainment industry further position him among the true artisans of contemporary popular culture.
