We are pleased to invite you to the workshop “Cuttings and Grafting: Technical Complexity and Biological Precision – REPRODUCING LIFE: Science and Practice of Plant Propagation”, which will take place on Saturday, May 23rd, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Hortus Urbis.

An event dedicated to anyone who wishes to learn how to propagate plants in a natural, effective, and accessible way, even without previous experience.

During the three-hour session we will explore:

  • the physiological mechanisms that regulate healing, rooting, and graft establishment
  • the differences between propagation by cuttings and propagation by grafting
  • how to choose the appropriate rootstock, scion, and plant material
  • the environmental and technical factors that determine successful grafting and rooting
  • the main techniques for cutting, preparing, and preserving plant material
The workshop will be divided into two parts:

  • a first theoretical section, clear and accessible
  • a practical laboratory session, where participants will directly experiment with the techniques
Guided by Alessandro Palenca, expert nurseryman and friend of Hortus Urbis, we will literally “get our hands in the soil” to closely observe how a new plant comes to life.

What You Will Learn

  • how to properly prepare a cutting
  • how to perform a simple graft and encourage successful establishment
  • which plant species are best suited to different propagation techniques
  • which tools to use and how to maintain them efficiently
  • the most common mistakes that compromise propagation success
  • how to independently reproduce the techniques at home or in the garden
The workshop is part of the educational series: “REPRODUCING LIFE: Science and Practice of Plant Propagation” a cycle of lessons dedicated to different strategies of vegetative propagation, from seed sowing to more advanced techniques.

Practical Information

  • Venue: Hortus Urbis, Via Appia Antica 42/50 – Rome
