Hi, I’m Tim König, and this is the story of how my husband Giulio and I bid farewell to our familiar life in the United States to begin a vibrant new chapter in
Abruzzo, Italia.
What started as a late-night dream shared over coffee eventually blossomed into a full-scale life transformation—one filled with breathtaking beauty, unexpected challenges, a deep sense of community, and a rhythm of life we didn’t even realize we were missing. Moving across an ocean isn’t just about changing your coordinates; it’s about rewriting the very fabric of your daily existence.

My roots are planted in New Mexico, where I grew up surrounded by vast desert skies and a culture rich in history. Giulio’s heritage is equally diverse; he was born in
Modica, Sicily
, raised in Germany, and spent three decades in the United States. Together, we built a life in the Dallas–Fort Worth area—a life that was fast-paced, convenient, and deeply familiar. We had our routines, our favorite spots, and the comfort of the American dream, yet something persistent inside us longed for a different pace. We craved a different meaning and a more intentional way of living that the suburban hustle couldn’t provide.

In February 2023, that longing turned into action. We boarded a plane to
Pescara
, carrying only our absolute essentials and a shared, unwavering belief that life could be more than just a series of tasks. Stepping off the plane, the crisp Adriatic air felt like a promise of the adventures to come.

Italy doesn’t just change your mailing address; it fundamentally alters your internal tempo. Here, life moves with a conscious intention that is both refreshing and transformative. People actually stop to talk to one another in the piazza, and meals are revered ceremonies to be shared slowly rather than rushed between appointments. Every town we visited seemed to have its own distinct personality, ancient traditions, and a unique heartbeat that echoed through its cobblestone streets. We quickly learned that life in Italy runs on a different rhythm and time scale altogether.

Abruzzo, in particular, captured our hearts instantly. It is a ruggedly beautiful region where the snow-capped mountains seem to kiss the sparkling sea. Medieval villages cling defiantly to hilltops, and the local people greet you like long-lost family even before they’ve learned your name. There is an earthy authenticity here that felt like home from the moment we arrived.

Of course, the transition wasn’t without its hurdles. Arriving in Italy meant diving head-first into a daunting mountain of paperwork. We found ourselves navigating the complexities of residency applications, medical registrations, and obtaining tax codes. We had to manage immigration documents and identity cards, all while Giulio worked to re-enter the Italian system after his decades abroad. Since my own immigration status depended entirely on his, the stakes felt incredibly high.

The process was initially overwhelming, but our experience changed completely when we discovered the team at
Expats Living in Rome.
They became the guides we desperately needed, helping us understand exactly which documents were required and how to prepare them properly. They coached us on what to expect during our appointments, showing us how to avoid common delays and navigate the intricate legal system with newfound confidence. They didn’t just provide a service; they empowered us to take control of our new lives.

Once our legal documents were finally in order, we began the exciting yet terrifying search for a permanent home. We quickly realized that
buying property in Italy
is nothing like the process in the United States; the rhythm is slower, the legal requirements are distinct, and things can go sideways if you aren’t prepared for the local nuances. Once again, we turned to the experts at Expats Living in Rome to help us navigate this path.

They masterfully coordinated the communication between real estate agents, notaries, sellers, and local government offices. Their presence ensured that everything went smoothly, allowing us to simply show up and sign the final papers. Because of their support, we are now the proud homeowners of a beautiful property in
Silvi Paese
, a stunning hilltop town that offers panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea. Walking through our front door for the first time was a moment of pure magic.

As we settled into our new life, we felt a profound desire to give back to the region that had welcomed us so warmly. We wanted to help other newcomers find their footing just as we had been helped. This led us to partner with Expats Living in Rome to create the
Abruzzo Expats WhatsApp Group
. What started as a small chat has grown into a thriving community of nearly 100 members, each embarking on their own unique Italian adventure.

Our group has become a hub of activity where we host local meetups, networking events, and enchanting wine tours through the local vineyards. We organize cultural outings and provide essential support for newcomers navigating their first weeks in Italy. It has been incredibly rewarding to see these connections flourish and to watch as Abruzzo claims the hearts of others just as it did ours.

People often ask us why we chose Abruzzo over the more famous regions of Italy. The answer is simple: Abruzzo represents pure authenticity. It offers a rare combination of natural beauty, deep-rooted community, and genuine affordability. Whether it’s the rugged mountains or the ancient traditions that still thrive in every village, Abruzzo is a place where you can truly find a home. It didn’t just welcome us; it claimed us as its own.

If you’re dreaming of your own Italian adventure, we would love to welcome you into our community. Whether you’re planning a permanent move, exploring the region for a summer, or simply curious about the lifestyle, you’ll find friends, support, and inspiration waiting for you. You can request to join our Abruzzo
Abruzzo Expats WhatsApp Group
.  Please note that members will need approval from an admin to join. We can’t wait to meet you and share the magic of Abruzzo together.
