The new service marks a landmark for Italian commercial aviation, coming after authorisation was granted by ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority, based on its new rules governing the transport of dogs in the cabin. In this initial phase, the Large Dog On Board service will operate only on selected domestic ITA Airways flights, within the maximum number of large dogs permitted under ENAC's authorisation. At launch, a maximum of two large dogs will be carried in the cabin, in dedicated spaces - one weighing up to 30kg in Business class, and another up to 15kg in Economy. ITA Airways chief executive and general manager, Joerg Eberhart, said the launch of Large Dog On Board marked a concrete step towards a way of travelling more attentive to passengers' needs. He said the airline had listened to customer requests and worked alongside ENAC to allow passengers to share their journey with their four-legged companions, avoiding separations and making the flying experience calmer for the whole family.
