Five members of far-right terrorist groups were subsequently convicted in relation to the Bologna massacre, while investigations also uncovered alleged links to Italy's secret services. Mattarella statement "The profound mark left by the massacre of 2 August 1980, at the Bologna train station is engraved in the history of the Republic and in the conscience of Italians" - Mattarella said in a statement - "The infinite pain for so many defenceless victims, women, men, and children; the emotion for the anguish and suffering of their families; the dismay at the destruction wrought at the heart of civil life in the city and the entire nation are renewed today, as on every anniversary." The president said the anniversary of the tragedy serves to "reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding a future built on the values of freedom, justice, and democracy - the values that the neo-fascist strategy of terror sought to destroy. That commitment, that solidarity that Bologna and Italy as a whole were able to offer to prevent the assassins and their accomplices from succeeding in their attempt to subvert constitutional principles, undermine coexistence, and undermine social achievements. The Italian people defeated them in the arduous search for the truth."
