Metal mesh 'forest' of columns rises in Rome piazza
Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi's Selva transforms the square outside Valentino's PM23 exhibition space with 16 transparent columns. An installation of 16 metal mesh columns, each more than six metres high, has been installed in Piazza Mignanelli, near the Spanish Steps, by the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation.Titled Selva (Forest), the work by Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi is a new commisson for the piazza, home to PM23, the exhibition space that hosts the cultural activities supported by the Foundation. The piece draws on one of the earliest images of dwelling, the column as a tree, with the group of columns forming a forest. Tresoldi's trademark metal mesh gives the structures a presence that is both tangible and immaterial, allowing them to occupy the space without hiding it and changing how it is seen through transparency.

The Foundation said the commission reflects its approach to patronage, which is not only to support existing works but to create the conditions for something new to emerge. It added that entrusting the piazza to the artist means giving him freedom and trust to turn it once again into a meeting point between the history linking the square to its founders and a new artistic experience. The project is part of the Foundation's long-standing collaboration with Roma Capitale, and in particular with Municipio I, the municipal borough covering the historic centre.Tresoldi was born in Milan in 1987. He creates large-scale public artworks exploring the relationship between bodies, architecture and landscape, often engaging with archaeology and the landscape of ruins. He describes his works as "anti-monuments".
Valentino and Venus
The installation follows a year of loss and tribute for the Foundation. The legendary fashion designer Valentino Garavani died at the age of 93 at his home in Rome in January, and his body lay in state at PM23 before his funeral in the city.
PM23 had opened its exhibition Venus: Valentino Garavani through the eyes of Joana Vasconcelos the day before the designer died. The show, the space's second exhibition, set the Portuguese artist's monumental works beside Valentino's haute couture and extended into Rome with public installations, among them I'll Be Your Mirror in Piazza Mignanelli.
The Foundation was established to preserve and celebrate Valentino's legacy while promoting contemporary culture through art, fashion and creativity. It describes its guiding principle as "Beauty Creates Beauty".
