Milan faces public transport strike on Friday 9 October

Metro, bus and tram services in Milan may be disrupted for most of the day on 9 October, with guaranteed services only in the early morning and mid-afternoon.Milan's public transport network faces a 24-hour strike on Friday 9 October, with possible disruption to the metro, buses and trams run by city transport company ATM.The strike was called by the unions AL Cobas and Confial Trasporti. According to ATM, services may not be guaranteed between 08.45 and 15.00, and again after 18.00 until the end of service. Services are due to run normally from the start of the day until 08.45, and between 15.00 and 18.00. The stoppage could affect all five metro lines (M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5) as well as surface routes. The impact will depend on how many staff take part, and the situation may vary from line to line and change during the day. Commuters and students should expect cancellations, irregular frequencies and longer waits outside the guaranteed periods. The Como-Brunate funicular, also operated by the ATM group, is affected too. Service there may not be guaranteed between 08.30 and 16.30, or after 19.30 until the end of service. Why are workers striking? The unions cite a long list of grievances. They include opposition to the liberalisation, privatisation and tendering of services currently run by the ATM group. Other demands concern worker safety and protection from assaults, the cleaning of vehicles, holiday entitlement, converting part-time contracts to full-time and a net pay rise of โ‚ฌ150. Confial Trasporti has added further demands, including improved accessibility for blind passengers, the scheduling of drivers' shifts and breaks, and staff housing. Two workers' demonstrations are also planned during the day, outside the ATM depot in viale Sarca and the company's offices in via Messina. Trains and other services The strike is local and does not involve the rail sector. Trenord regional trains and the Passante Ferroviario (the city's suburban rail link) are expected to run as normal.ATM advises passengers to check for updates on its official channels before travelling. Those who need to move around the city outside the guaranteed hours may want to consider bike sharing, scooter sharing or e-scooters. Anyone driving should expect heavier traffic and difficulty finding parking in central areas.
