Keith Haring Arrives at Rome’s Cielo Bar, in Cocktail Form
Hotel de la Ville Turns Three of the Artist’s Icons Into Drinks, Open to Romans as Well as Hotel GuestsRome’s big autumn art show now has a drinks list. Until April, the Hotel de la Ville is extending its cultural partnership with the new Keith Haring exhibition at the Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi beyond the gallery walls and onto the Cielo Bar, the hotel’s panoramic terrace overlooking the city’s rooftops and monuments. The hotel’s Director of Mixology, Simone Di Serio, has created a small menu of three cocktails, each inspired by one of the artist’s iconic works. The idea, according to the hotel, is to translate Haring’s visual language of color, energy and contrast into something you can drink.
The Three Cocktails
Barking Dog takes its name from one of Haring’s best-known motifs, the barking dog. It combines Aperitivo Leta, Mancino Ambrato Vermouth, Bulldog London Dry Gin and strawberries.
Tree of Life pairs Altamura Vodka with blue curaçao, rosemary and lemon, a mix that brings the vivid blue and green palette of the artist’s work to mind.
Radiant Baby, named for another of Haring’s signature figures, the glowing child, is built around Adriatico Amaretto Zero Alcohol, with Strucchi Bitter Bianco, lime, pineapple, vanilla and a “velvet magic foam” topping.
The hotel says the menu is open not only to its guests but also to Romans and the local community. In its words, the aim is to continue the dialogue with Haring after a visit to Palazzo Braschi and bring his language into the city’s daily life, “between art, mixology and conviviality.”
The Exhibition Behind the Menu
The cocktails exist because of the show itself. Keith Haring runs at the Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschi from October 6, 2026 to April 11, 2027, so it opened only two days ago, and the cocktail menu is meant to last for the same period.
The exhibition brings together more than 140 works and materials, drawn mainly from the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, described as the world’s largest collection devoted to the artist, along with other public and private loans. It is curated by Kaoru Yanase, Ilaria Miarelli Mariani and Claudio Zambianchi. According to the organizers, the show is arranged in themed sections covering street art, political and social engagement, the body, vital energy, the accessibility of art, and the symbolic and spiritual side of his work.
Rome has a role in the story. A group of photographs by Stefano Fontebasso De Martino documents the works Haring created in 1984 at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, during the exhibition Arte di frontiera. Those pieces were temporary and were later erased, so the photographs are the surviving record of his visit to the capital. The exhibition’s guiding idea, “Art Is for Everybody,” reflects Haring’s conviction that art belongs to everyone, a belief that fits neatly with a hotel bar opening its doors to the neighborhood.
Why a Hotel Bar Makes Sense
Cultural partnerships between luxury hotels and major exhibitions are a familiar way of keeping an event in the city’s conversation after visitors leave the museum. For Rome, the tie-in suits the subject. Haring built his reputation by taking art out of galleries and into subway stations and public walls, and a menu that invites non-guests to drink his imagery follows a similar spirit, albeit with a view of Rome’s skyline.
