Strikes to disrupt air travel in Italy on 16 October

A 24-hour walkout by easyJet pilots and cabin crew, plus stoppages at Tuscan airports, could hit flights across the country on Friday.Air passengers in Italy face possible delays and cancellations on Friday 16 October when easyJet cabin crew and several groups of airport workers walk out.  The main action is a 24-hour national strike by easyJet flight crew, running from 00.00 to 23.59. According to the transport ministry’s strike calendar, it was called by the USB Lavoro Privato union, the private-sector arm of the Unione Sindacale di Base.   On the same day, staff at Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta, who work at Pisa and Florence airports, will also stop work, along with employees of Poste Air Cargo.   Why are they striking? The easyJet dispute centres on a company contract renewal signed on 15 September. An internal consultation of easyJet’s pilots and flight attendants, run by other unions, backed the deal. USB said the results were published late and that its request to observe the vote was refused.   In a statement on 6 October, USB said 45 per cent of colleagues were calling for different representation. It argued the deal weakens the entitlement to a 13th-month "tredicesima" salary, which employees had won through the courts. It also said the real pay rises were minimal and that back pay for the period without a contract was largely absorbed by the 13th-month payments.   USB named Cgil, Cisl, Uil, Ugl Trasporto Aereo and Anpac as the unions that announced the vote result. It said the strike was also about union representation and democracy. The union said it would continue with the strike and hold assemblies beforehand. Guaranteed flights Under Italian rules on air-transport strikes, flights scheduled in two protected time bands should operate as normal: from 07.00 to 10.00 and from 18.00 to 21.00. Passengers could still see changes, as the actual impact will depend on how many workers take part.   Not every easyJet flight will be cancelled, and the airline may announce changes to individual services closer to the day. Travellers should check their flight status with easyJet and their departure and arrival airports before leaving for the airport. If a flight is cancelled, airlines can offer rerouting, rebooking or a refund under EU rules.   For official details of upcoming strikes in Italy see the strike calendar published by the transport ministry.
