Pisa Airport unveils new terminal in first phase of €80 million expansion
Arrivals terminal is the first of three phases in the largest investment in the airport’s history, with work due to finish in 2028.Pisa’s Galileo Galilei Airport inaugurated its new arrivals terminal on Monday, completing the first phase of an €80 million expansion and refurbishment programme. The 7,100 sq m building, which has a 300kW photovoltaic system on its roof, is for arriving passengers only. It is not yet in operation. Testing and commissioning must be completed first, and no opening date for passengers has been announced.
Once arrivals move into the new building, the existing terminal will be converted for departures only, separating the flow of passengers in each direction.
Phases two and three
The second phase will renovate the current arrivals area, around 6,700 sq m on the ground floor plus a further 1,580 sq m on the first floor, for use by departing passengers. The third and final phase will renovate the existing departures terminal (about 3,680 sqm on the ground floor) and remove the first-floor passport control area to enlarge the boarding hall for non-Schengen flights.
When all the work is complete, the boarding area will grow from 3,150 sqm to more than 6,500 sqm. The airport’s total floor space will reach about 50,600 sqm, 28 per cent more than at present, with capacity of between six and seven million passengers a year. Plans also include new food and retail outlets and improvements to digital services, passenger comfort and sustainability.
The programme is the largest investment ever made at Pisa and is entirely funded by Toscana Aeroporti, which operates both Pisa and Florence airports. Work is due to be completed by 2028 while the airport remains open.
Record traffic
The inauguration comes as passenger numbers continue to rise. Pisa handled 664,000 passengers in September, its busiest September on record and 10.6 per cent more than a year earlier.
In the first nine months of 2026, traffic passed five million for the first time, up 6.6 per cent on the same period of 2025. Pisa and Florence together exceeded eight million passengers over the period.
The ceremony ended with a surprise appearance by tenor Andrea Bocelli, who sang the Italian national anthem and Con te partirò.
Pisa and Florence
Tuscany regional president Eugenio Giani said the terminal highlights Pisa’s role in intercontinental flights and confirms Florence as a “city airport”. He said the two airports must work together, or air traffic from central Tuscany would go to Bologna instead. Pisa came first, he said, and now it is Florence’s turn.
Transport councillor Filippo Boni said the region is heading for record passenger numbers, while deputy transport minister Edoardo Rixi said a national airports plan is close to final approval.
Toscana Aeroporti chief executive Roberto Naldi called the terminal the first step in a project that will gradually change the face of the airport.
