Naples airport to close for month of November

Capodichino’s runway will be rebuilt in a €30 million overhaul, with some flights diverted to Salerno.Naples airport will close to all air traffic from 1 to 30 November for a major overhaul of its runway, with part of the traffic moved to Salerno. The €30 million project covers the main runway and its taxiways, and is being carried out by Adr Infrastrutture, which won the contract. Airport operator GESAC says the aim is to guarantee safety, reliability and operational continuity over the long term. The works will cover 250,000 square metres and involve about 500 people, working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The existing pavement layers will be removed and the runway structure rebuilt using high-performance materials designed to last longer. Some of the demolition material will be reused temporarily to build noise barriers around the site. The runway and taxiway lighting and signalling systems will also be replaced and upgraded.GESAC scheduled the closure for a period of lower air traffic to limit disruption to passengers. Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento airport will take over part of the traffic, offering 15 destinations in November. Six are domestic: Bergamo, Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Genoa, Turin and Trieste. The international routes are Amsterdam, Barcelona, Casablanca, Dubai, Düsseldorf, Madrid, Paris, Sharm el-Sheikh and Stuttgart. Both of Salerno’s terminals will be in use. The recently opened general aviation terminal will handle commercial flights to Casablanca, Dubai, Sharm el-Sheikh and Madrid. To help passengers reach Salerno, GESAC and Busitalia Campania will run an extra bus service between Piazza Garibaldi, outside Naples Centrale station, and Salerno airport. There will be eight services a day in each direction, timed to match flight departures and arrivals. Tickets cost €12 per person each way and are bought on board by card or other electronic payment. Daily buses between Salerno airport and Salerno railway station have been increased, and existing links to Potenza, Eboli, Battipaglia and the Amalfi Coast remain in place. A shared taxi service with a fixed fare is also being trialled between the airport and the main railway stations in Naples and Salerno. Passengers booked to fly to or from Naples in November should check with their airline for the latest information on their flights. Photo credit: M-Production / Shutterstock.com
