Four killed in Italian military helicopter crash in Bosnia
Defence Village inauguration at Rome’s Circus Maximus cancelled as Italy mourns Army and Red Cross personnel.Four Italian military personnel were killed on Thursday when an Army Chinook helicopter crashed in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina during the EU’s Eufor Althea mission. The tragedy has led to the cancellation of the inauguration of the Defence Village (Villaggio Difesa) at Rome’s Circus Maximus, which had scheduled for 10.00 on Friday 30 October. The CH-47 Chinook came down in the afternoon near the village of Gorica, in the Brčko district, with 15 people on board. Eleven others were injured, none of them in a life-threatening condition, and are being treated in hospitals in Brčko and Tuzla. The dead are Army Aviation sergeants Simone Ruggia and Claudio Marchesi, from the Antares regiment in Viterbo, and two members of the Italian Red Cross Military Corps: lieutenant Franco Adriano Zecchillo and sergeant Laura Procacci.Defence minister Guido Crosetto said the ministry waited for the news to reach the families before releasing the names. He said he would fly to Bosnia on Friday morning with the chief of the defence staff and a further team of military doctors to visit the wounded.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Eufor said the aircraft was on a routine training flight, and Italian media reported that a collision with high-voltage cables is among the hypotheses being examined. Local officials said it came down in an uninhabited area.President Sergio Mattarella sent a message to the chief of the defence staff expressing “deep emotion” and closeness to the victims’ families. Prime minister Giorgia Meloni said her thoughts were with the victims, their families and all those “living hours of anguish”. Crosetto described an “immense pain” and said the country owed its gratitude to the soldiers who died serving Italy. The tragedy has changed plans for the Defence Village, which was due to be inaugurated on Friday morning as part of events for National Unity and Armed Forces Day on 4 November, and to run until that date. Crosetto said it would instead become a place for people to pay tribute “with a prayer, a flower, a note or their presence”.The gates at the Circus Maximus will now open to the public at 14.00 on Friday.Italy has around 300 troops in Eufor Althea, which has been led by Italian general Maurizio Fronda since January.
