New bomb threats hit flights to and from Italy

Dublin-Rome flight lands at French military base as Italian air force jets are scrambled for Helsinki service. An Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome was diverted to a French military airbase on Thursday after a bomb threat, one of three alerts affecting flights to or from Italy that morning. The Airbus A320 took off from Dublin at 06.25 and was due in Rome around 10.30. It turned back near Paris and made an emergency landing at Évreux-Fauville airbase in Normandy, escorted by French fighter jets. The French prime minister’s office said it was monitoring the situation. French media reported the original alert came from the Italian authorities. All 151 passengers and six crew were moved to a safe place before bomb disposal teams inspected the aircraft. No information was given on the origin of the threat. Meanwhile, a Finnair flight from Helsinki landed normally at Rome Fiumicino at 09.30, newspaper Corriere della Sera reports. Italian air force jets had been activated after anonymous reports of a possible bomb alert. Police bomb disposal teams carried out checks after landing, and airport sources said operations at the airport were not affected. A Wizz Air Airbus A321 from Milan's Malpensa Silvio Berlusconi airport to Warsaw (flight W4 6387), which left at 07.00, was diverted to Vienna after a bomb threat received in flight. The airline said it followed security protocols and was cooperating fully with the authorities, news agency ANSA reports. The incidents follow a wave of alerts on Tuesday, when around 10 flights across Europe were targeted. They included at least four Ryanair services, among them another Dublin-Rome flight, as well as aircraft operated by SAS, LOT and Wizz Air. Two Ryanair planes were searched at Fiumicino after an anonymous tip-off, while Warsaw-Chopin airport was briefly closed. Authorities said no devices were found. On Monday, a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Sofia made an emergency landing in Budapest, escorted by two Hungarian fighter jets. This is a developing story....
