Rome’s summer festival season is well and truly over. Temperatures are a little below average, but you won’t suffer from the cold, but there is one thing in common with the hottest months of the year: you won’t go without good music. This November’s lineup in the capital is full of interesting events, ranging from Mozart to the most experimental improvisation, and it’s also a chance to visit some magnificent sites of great historical importance.

With a few gems from visiting musicians, performing sacred and secular, classical and contemporary repertoire, this season in Rome promises to capture all the moods of a fall landscape, right from the comfort of buildings with truly exceptional acoustics.

Mozart is celebrated on Saturday, November 21, at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, with a performance of the Coronation Mass for organ, choir, soloists and orchestra, conducted by maestro Riccardo Muti. It’s a must for anyone who wants to hear great music inside one of Rome’s major papal basilicas.

If you’d rather stay in the historic center and still enjoy the Austrian master, on Tuesday, November 24, the Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola hosts the Stiftsmusik string quartet from Salzburg. More than a place of worship, Sant’Ignazio in Campo Marzio is a Baroque masterpiece set on a theatrical little square just steps from the Pantheon. On the same days, the hosts a conference and a series of live concerts devoted to musical improvisation. The voice, flute, clarinet and saxophone of Nuova Consonanza meet the International Contemporary Ensemble at Villa Aurelia, home of the American cultural institution. Villa Aurelia is one bus stop from the nearest of our apartments, Domus Claudiae, which sits on a quiet pedestrian street. It’s a rich schedule that also extends to other cultural venues around Rome, including the former slaughterhouse – i.e. the Mattatoio – a short walk from our apartment.

On the theme of musical innovation, a tribute to Miles Davis on the centenary of his birth is a must. The Casa del Jazz and the Auditorium Morricone are opening their doors to the public, and Trastevere’s Alcazar is joining the Roman jazz program too. On Friday, November 20, the club hosts Omasta, a collective rooted in jazz but deeply immersed in the rhythms of hip-hop and street culture. Rome rereads musical genius in three ways: the one that evolved from Renaissance to Baroque and became what we now call “Classical” music in Mozart, the syncopated one that revolutionized melodic language with Davis, and today’s contemporary improvisation, an invitation to rethink musical genres across the long view of the Eternal City. Rome sounds good in autumn, too.
