An art explosion arrives in Rome. Tiffany Parks shares her preview.
Every four years in Rome, a contemporary art exposition takes the city by storm. The 2020 edition of Romeโs Art Quadriennale takes place at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and the title this year is FUORI, which can translate to โoutโ or โoutside.โ The exposition is a unique and unforgettable journey through Italian art from the 1960s to the present day.

The works on display have been created by 43 artists, more than half of whom are under age 40, including 19 women, 17 men, and seven collectives. The quadriennale aims to reinterpret Italian art in an unexpected way by building previously unseen bridges between different generations of artists from various creative sectors. The result of three years of research, FUORI presents paintings, sculptures, videos, drawings, and installations resulting from the mingling of visual arts with other disciplines such as drama, dance, cinema, fashion, architecture, music, and design, breaking down barriers between disciplines, media, gender, and sexual identity.
While not strictly a themed exhibition, FUORI reflects on three distinct fields of research: the Palace, as a metaphor for the relationship between art and power, aptly illustrated by the venue itself, Palazzo delle Esposizioni; Desire, highlighting the sense of seduction at the very heart of art; and Immeasurable, a testament to the need of art to transcend the boundaries of the imagination. FUORI is an invitation to think outside the box, to take an off-center position, to see things from an oblique angle, free from any constraint or category.
Curators Sarah Cosulich and Stefano Collicelli Cagol collaborated with architect Alessandro Bava to interpret the exhibition via the spaces of Palazzo delle Esposizioni, and actor and performer Luca Scarlini to develop an original storytelling project in which the history of the Quadriennale archive is intertwined with the works presented in the exhibition.
