US tourist seriously injured after diving off 30-metre high landmark on Italy's Amalfi Coast
Fjord of Furore once hosted high-diving contest.An American tourist was hospitalised on Monday afternoon with serious spinal injuries after diving off the 30-metre high Fjord of Furore, a landmark on Italy's Amalfi Coast.The 45-year-old mother of three had been on vacation in Italy with family and friends when she decided to jump off the bridge over the fjord, located between the towns of Positano and Amalfi.
The woman reportedly fainted due to the violent impact with the water before being rescued and taken to the beach, still unconscious, until the arrival of emergency services.
A hydro-ambulance departed from Positano, loaded the woman on a stretcher, and took her to Amalfi where an ambulance was waiting for her.
She was taken first to the emergency room in Castiglione di Ravello before being airlifted to the Ruggi Hospital in Salerno.
The woman has been monitored around the clock and doctors warn that she risks becoming paralysed, newspaper Corriere della Sera reports.
This is not the first time foreign tourists have taken the perilous plunge from the Fjord of Furore which until a few years ago hosted a professional high-diving championship.
