Rome to switch off Trevi Fountain in call for end to war in Gaza

Italian capital to use one iconic landmark to call for peace in Gaza.Rome will turn off the lights at the Trevi Fountain for one hour on the night of Friday 18 July, from 22.00 to 23.00, to call for an end to Israel's war in Gaza. The city said the symbolic gesture to call for an end to hostilities in the Gaza Strip and reaffirm Rome's "commitment to peace and respect for human rights" stems from a motion unanimously approved by the city council last month. "Rome will not remain silent" - the city said in a statement - "Faced with civilian victims, destruction, and violations of international law, the capital city chooses to make its voice heard." While the lights are switched off on Friday night, the city will project a slogan in Italian and English calling for an end to the war in Gaza onto the façade of the iconic landmark. The move comes the day after Italy's premier Giorgia Meloni condemned an Israeli strike that hit the only Catholic church in Gaza on Thursday, killing two people and injuring several others. Earlier this year Rome adhered to a nationwide campaign to remember the civilian victims of Israel's war on Gaza by displaying a white sheet from the balcony of city hall.
