Italian man who lost three fingers in New Year fireworks risks losing eye after he left hospital to set off rocket
Double-incident of New Year fireworks mayhem leaves Naples doctors speechless.Naples is renowned in Italy for its wild New Year's Eve fireworks, which leads to dozens of injuries every year, however one young man from Rome took the capodanno madness to a whole other level on Thursday. The 24-year-old ended up in the city's Pellegrini Hospital twice in the early hours of New Year's Day after sustaining serious injuries in two separate firework-related incidents.
The man, who was visiting the southern Italian city for New Year's Eve, lost three fingers after an explosive petardo firecracker blew up in his hand just after midnight.
Following the amputation the man was discharged - against medical advice - and returned to the streets to celebrate with his friends.
Shortly afterwards he returned to the emergency room in the same hospital with serious injuries to one eyeball, also caused by fireworks.
He told doctors he was hit while walking on the street, however Carabinieri police did not believe his version of events and allege that he set off the rocket which hit him directly in the face.
The man underwent another operation, with the risk that his vision will never return to normal, according to Italian news reports.
He then discharged himself voluntarily, once again against the advice of his doctors, and went back to Rome with his parents who travelled specially to Naples to take him home.
