The Gemelli made world headlines last year when Pope Francis was hospitalised there for five weeks before his death in the Vatican on Easter Monday. Sometimes referred to as "the pope's hospital", the Gemelli has a section on the 10th floor reserved exclusively for popes. In addition to Francis, Pope John Paul II was treated there after being shot in 1981.
