Gemelli hospital ranked 33rd in the world.Rome's Policlinico Gemelli has been rated the best hospital in Italy in the annual rankings compiled by American magazine Newsweek and global data research firm Statista R.The Gemelli is ranked among the top 50 hospitals internationally, claiming to 33rd position in the 2026 edition of the World's Best Hospitals list.
The list assessed 2,400 hospitals in 32 countries, taking into account a variety of key performance indicators, tens of thousands of interviews with doctors and health professionals, and patient satisfaction questionnaires.
Top rated Italian hospitals
Italy has five hospitals in the world's top 100 in the latest report: the Gemelli is followed by the Niguarda in Milan (43rd place internationally), Humanitas in Milan (51), San Raffaele in Milan (57) and Sant'Orsola in Bologna (76).

The other eight Italian hospitals in the 2026 rankings are the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo (104th place internationally), University Hospital of Padua (127), San Matteo Hospital in Pavia (134), Integrated University Hospital of Verona - Borgo Trento Hospital (142), Careggi University Hospital in Florence (192), Modena Polyclinic Hospital (198), Sant'Andrea University Hospital in Rome (203), and the Molinette Hospital in Turin (221).
Top 10 in the world
The Mayo Clinic-Rochester is once again in first place in the World's Best Hospitals list, followed by Toronto General, the Cleveland Clinic, Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset in Sweden, and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston fifth place.
Differences Between US and Italian Healthcare Systems
The John Hopkins hospital in Baltimore is in sixth place, followed by Sheba Medical Center in Israel, the Charité-Universitätsmedizin in Berlin, the Universitätsspital in Zurich, and Singapore General in tenth place.
The Gemelli made world headlines last year when Pope Francis was hospitalised there for five weeks before his death in the Vatican on Easter Monday.
Sometimes referred to as "the pope's hospital", the Gemelli has a section on the 10th floor reserved exclusively for popes. In addition to Francis, Pope John Paul II was treated there after being shot in 1981.
