Italian police shut down star-studded party on Stromboli due to music ban
Police broke up party due to Wednesday music ban on Italian volcanic island.A glamorous end-of-shoot party attended by celebrities including Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger was brought to an abrupt halt on the Italian volcanic island of Stromboli after carabinieri intervened to enforce a local ordinance banning music on Wednesday evenings.Partygoers included actors Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, Josh O'Connor, and Isabella Rossellini, whose acclaimed film director father Roberto and mother - Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman - fell in love and began their scandalous affair on the same island while filming the 1950 cult classic Stromboli.
The wrap party celebration had been organised in a local venue to mark the conclusion of filming on Three Incestuous Sisters, the new film by Italian director Alice Rohrwacher.
The production had spent roughly a month on Stromboli, transforming the small Aeolian island into an international film set.
The officers are reported to have been called by local residents. According to eyewitnesses, the music was playing from a small speaker at a reasonable volume, and the stars accepted the order to stop with good grace, expressing surprise but raising no objection.
The following day the crew departed the island by public ferry, while Jagger left by private helicopter.
Criticism
The incident provoked sharp criticism from local tourism figures. Rosa Oliva, president of the Pro Loco association Amo Stromboli, said the episode was yet another sign of a territory being penalised even in its moments of community and international visibility, after a winter marked by serious neglect.
She argued that the mayor of Lipari - the municipality to which Stromboli belongs - should at minimum have welcomed the guests and thanked them for their significant contribution to the Aeolian economy.
The local tourism consortium Brand Eolie went further, publicly apologising to Jagger on behalf of the island community and inviting him back as their guest, to choose the island, the date and the means of arrival for a fresh evening out.
Movie
In the film, Jagger plays a cameo role as the lighthouse keeper of Strombolicchio - father to the character Kyo, portrayed by Josh O'Connor - around whom the three sister protagonists revolve.
The film is adapted from a graphic novel by Audrey Niffenegger, with a screenplay co-written by Rohrwacher and author Ottessa Moshfegh. There is no official release date yet.
