If you live in the Lazio region of Italy (which includes Rome) and have a dog, cat, or ferret, you should be aware of the regional pet registry (Anagrafe Regionale degli Animali da Compagnia). This system helps identify pets, reunite lost animals with their owners, and track important information about your pet.

By law (L.281/1991, L.R. 34/1997, DGR 621/2016), anyone with a dog in Lazio must:

• Have the dog microchipped.

• Register the dog with the regional pet registry.

This must be done within two months of the dog’s birth or within 10 days of acquiring the dog (whether you’re the new owner or simply the caretaker).

The microchip is a tiny capsule implanted under the skin with a simple injection. It contains a unique code that links to the owner’s information in the registry. If your dog is lost, authorities can quickly read the chip and contact you.

Cats and ferrets are not required to be microchipped or registered by default. However, microchipping and registration become mandatory if:

• You buy or sell the animal.

• You travel with the animal outside Lazio, to other European countries, or outside Europe.

In all other cases, registration for cats and ferrets is optional but recommended.

You can register your pet at:

• Your local ASL (Azienda Sanitaria Locale) – the public health authority.

• An accredited private veterinarian.

Only adults (18+) can register an animal under their name.

If you transfer your dog to a new owner, you must register the change of ownership. Both the old and new owners must sign the official form (“modello per la denuncia delle variazioni in anagrafe canina”) and provide ID.

If the dog comes from another Italian region, the new owner must also submit the previous region’s transfer document.

If you change your residence or your dog’s address, you must notify the ASL within 5 days using the variation form.

If you move to a different region, you must inform the ASL in your new region within 5 days and include proof of the residence change from your previous region’s registry.

If your dog goes missing, you must immediately report it to the authorities (Carabinieri, Police, or Municipal Police). You’ll also need to file a report with your ASL using the variation form, attaching your ID and tax code.

If your dog dies, you must notify the ASL where it’s registered within 5 days so it can be removed from the registry. Submit the variation form along with your ID, tax code, and a death certificate from a veterinarian.

You can view your pet’s registration details, address changes, ownership transfers, and vaccination information online at the Lazio Region’s official site:
