In the very heart of Trastevere, a stone’s throw from the most celebrated bars and restaurants in this historic rione, From Home to Rome is delighted to present Piazza di Sant’Egidio — the newest addition to our portfolio of vacation rentals. This light-filled sanctuary promises to enchant those travelers seeking an authentic immersion in one of Rome’s most atmospheric neighborhoods.
Perched at the fourth floor of a medieval, listed building on Piazza di Sant’Egidio, this flat welcomes up to four guests. Please note that as the building preserves its original character without modern elevator installations, the property may not be suitable for travelers with mobility considerations or families with very young children.

Step inside Sant’Egidio and you’ll immediately notice what sets this residence apart: an abundance of natural light that floods every corner of the space. The windows frame views of Trastevere’s timeworn rooftops, and simply relaxing on the sofa and watching the ever-changing shadows while listening to birdsong is a show in itself here!
Time seems to have stopped here: ancient timber ceiling beams, weathered by centuries, create a rhythmic pattern against crisp white walls, while the terracotta floor tiles—warm and earthy—seem to glow in the afternoon sun. This is not merely accommodation; it’s a study in how historic Roman dwellings harness and celebrate natural materials, creating spaces that feel both intimate and expansive. Look, for example, at the original decorative tiles in the kitchen —a testament to traditional Italian artisanship that you simply cannot replicate in modern construction. Even the tailor-made wooden cupboards and closets that dot the rooms in the apartment witnessed the transformation of Trastevere from a working-class neighborhood to one of the city’s most sought-after addresses!
Among the apartment’s most charming architectural features is an original fireplace—a beautiful reminder of how Romans once heated their homes during the city’s surprisingly chilly winters. While this striking element remains as a decorative focal point and conversation piece, please note that it is no longer functional and should not be used under any circumstances, as doing so would pose a serious fire hazard. Its presence, however, adds immeasurably to the apartment’s character, serving as a sculptural reminder of domestic life in centuries past.
A set of stairs tucked away in a corner of the living room (which doubles up as a second bedroom, thanks to a comfortable double sofa bed) leads to a terrace rooftop – cozy and perfect for your al fresco dinners or breakfast, it has breathtaking views over the Janiculum Hill and the rooftops of Trastevere – another layer of history embedded in your temporary home.

Directly across the building stands a former monastery, now transformed into the delightful Museo di Roma in Trastevere. The building’s history is more than just a bit of trivia. Its existence helps us understand how medieval Rome functioned, how communities organized around spiritual centers, and how architecture expressed faith and power.
History doesn’t stop at your doorstep. A brief stroll will bring you to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, which is officially recognized as Rome’s oldest church dedicated to the cult of the Virgin Mary. Further away are the Church of San Francesco a Ripa, built where St. Francis himself stayed while in Rome, and the Santa Cecilia monastery, both of which are witnesses to centuries of Roman life. Curious to know more about the area? Here’s an incredible tour that includes a visit to
the Tiber Island.
.. and these are just some of Trastevere’s incredible sites!
While Piazza di Sant’Egidio connects you to Rome’s medieval past, Trastevere is very much a neighborhood of the present moment. In recent years, it has emerged as perhaps the most dynamic quarter in Rome’s historic center—a place where authentic Roman culture intersects with contemporary creativity and international energy. From Michelin-starred restaurants and art galleries to bookstores and cafés, Trastevere appeals to modern travelers who want to experience culture, food, fashion, and much more.
